Ha Giang Loop by Easy Rider: Ma Pi Leng Pass, Nho Que River Canyon and Du Gia Homestay

There are a handful of roads in Vietnam that riders talk about for the rest of their lives. The Ha Giang Loop is at the top of that list.

Ha Giang Province sits at Vietnam's northernmost edge, where the country meets China across a landscape of fractured limestone, plunging gorges, and terraced mountains that seem too steep to farm — yet the Hmong, Tay, and Dao communities up here have been doing it for centuries. The scenery is unlike anything else in Southeast Asia, and the roads — particularly the Ma Pi Leng Pass and the Tham Ma Slope — are among the most dramatic riding in the region.

Our three-day loop covers the full circuit: from the twin peaks of Quan Ba Heaven's Gate on day one, through the Ma Pi Leng Pass and a boat trip through Tu San Canyon on day two, to the quieter valleys and Lung Tam linen weavers on the return. Nights are spent in Dong Van Ancient Town and in a traditional Tay stilt house homestay in Du Gia — two very different kinds of evening, both worth the ride to get there.
