This is one of the routes we are most proud to run — and one very few travellers ever find on their own. The Y Ty loop takes you deep into Lao Cai Province's border highlands, along roads that cling to ridgelines above 2,000 metres, through villages where Ha Nhi, Flower H'mong, and Dao communities still live largely on their own terms. No tourist crowds. No paved resort strips.
Over three days you cross high passes above the clouds, ride the Chinese border road to Lung Po Flagpole, sleep in family homestays in Y Ty and Bac Ha, and finish at one of the most authentic ethnic markets in the entire northwest. The total distance is around 380 km across roads that reward the effort.
Your guide rides alongside you on their own bike — not behind a car, not on a radio. One bike per rider. All fuel, meals, and homestays included.

Leave Sapa at 08:00 after a kit check and bike briefing with your guide. The first hour is one of the better introductions to this region: the valley drops away fast and the road begins hugging ridgelines above the treeline toward Ban Xeo. A stop above the village for the view, then down and across to Muong Hum Market by mid-morning — one of the smaller ethnic markets in Lao Cai, where Flower H'mong and Dao women trade produce and textiles most Sapa visitors never reach.
Lunch in Sang Ma Sao, a short walk through Nhiu Co San village, then the final push up to Y Ty. The road to Y Ty is the reason most people come on this tour: a single lane carved along a ridgeline with terraced valleys on both sides. Arrive at the homestay in the late afternoon. Dinner with the host family.
Banh Mi moment: Arriving in Y Ty as the afternoon mist rolls in across the terraces. The town is quiet, the air is cold, and it is clear you are very far from the Sapa tourist strip.

Total distance is approximately 380 km over three days. A valid motorbike licence (or equivalent) is required to ride. Riders should be comfortable on unpaved mountain roads. Automatic and semi-automatic bikes available; manual bikes for experienced riders. The tour departs from Sapa town; transport to Sapa is not included but can be arranged. Best months: September to October (harvest) and April to June (green terraces, dry roads).

Počasí v destinaci Sapa – Červenec
Vietnam lze navštívit po celý rok. Sever je v zimě (leden, únor) chladnější, na horách může i sněžit. Podzim (září, říjen) bývá ve středním Vietnamu deštivý. Jih je teplý po celý rok, od března do konce září s minimem srážek s výjimkou některých ostrovů. Nejlepší doba k návštěvě: únor–červen a září–prosinec.

Yes. A valid motorbike or motorcycle licence from your home country is required. You do not need a Vietnamese licence for the roads on this route, but you must be able to show a licence from your home country. We cannot take riders without one.
Dirt bikes: semi-automatic 150cc or 200cc trail bikes, suited to the mountain and unpaved sections on this route. Automatic bikes are available for riders who prefer them. Manual bikes for experienced riders on request. One bike per rider — your guide rides their own bike alongside you.
Moderate to challenging. Most of the route is paved mountain road with some unpaved sections near Y Ty and the border areas. Day two includes narrow mountain roads with steep descents that can be technical in wet conditions. You should be comfortable riding on uneven surfaces and confident at altitude. Beginners are not suitable for this route.
Lung Po is a Vietnamese border marker at the end of a mountain road in Lao Cai Province, where the track terminates at the Chinese frontier. The viewpoint looks across into Yunnan Province. It is notable for being genuinely off the beaten path — the road in exists for border patrol purposes, not tourism — and for the scale of the drop from the viewpoint.
September to October for golden rice terraces at harvest time. April to June for vivid green paddies and dry roads. July and August bring heavy rain — roads above 1,500 m can be slippery and some sections near the border may be impassable. December to February is cold at altitude but roads are drier; bring a proper thermal layer.
Keep it light: a small backpack on the bike rather than a large bag. Essentials: warm layer (cold above 1,500 m in the evening), rain jacket, gloves, changes of clothes for 2 nights, sunscreen, sunglasses, and any personal medication. Helmet, rain poncho, and bike tools are provided. Leave large luggage at your Sapa hotel.
Family homes in Y Ty and Bac Ha — basic but comfortable. Sleeping on mats or simple beds with blankets. Squat toilet, basic outdoor washing. Meals are cooked and eaten with the family. These are not guesthouses — the experience is part of the tour.
Yes — the minimum group size is 2. Couples and pairs who ride together can book a private departure or join a small group (maximum 10 riders per departure). Private departures on any date with 48 hours notice.
